Halloween Safety Tips

Halloween Safety Tips

Halloween can be an exciting time of the year. Here are some tips on how to stay safe and have fun this Halloween.

Walking Stafey:

  • Always look both ways before crossing the street - it is best to keep looking as you cross
  • Cross the street using traffic signals, and crosswalks when able to. If you are not able to be sure to cross at a street corner.
  • Always walk, don't run.
  • Put electronic devices down, and keep your head up.
  • Teach your kids to always make eye contact with drivers before crossing in front of them
  • Walk on the sidewalk when able to. If you are not able to, walk as close to the curb as possible while facing the oncoming traffic
  • Try to keep your route as direct as possible and minimize your need to cross the street
  • Watch for cars backing up or turning - never dart into the street or cross between parked cars
  • Go trick-or-treating with kids under 12 - if they are mature enough to go on their own, have them go out in a group and stick to familiar well-lit areas

Costumes

  • Add reflective tape or stickers to costumes and bags when possible
  • Choose face paint instead of a mask that may obstruct vision
  • Have kids wear glowsticks and/or carry a flashlight to help them see and be seen
  • When selecting a costume, make sure it doesn't drag or touch the ground to prevent tripping, and try to choose ones with light colours when possible

Drive Extra Cautiously

  • Slow down and be extra alert when driving in residential neighbourhoods - children are excited on Halloween and can move in unpredictable ways during peak trick-or-treaking hours
  • Take extra time to look for kids at intersections, on medians, and on curbs
  • When entering and exiting your driveway, drive slowly and carefully
  • Get rid of any distractions - like your phone - so you can concentrate on your surroundings
  • Make sure you have your headlights on - try making sure they are on earlier than normal
