Chevy Blazer vs Trailblazer - What are the Differences?

Just because they share part of a nameplate and have similar styling does not mean that the Chevrolet Blazer and Chevrolet Trailblazer are the same vehicles. In fact, they are almost too far removed from each other for a reasonable comparison. Yet, they are both Chevrolets, they both have "blazer" in their name, and they both offer capability to drivers. So what are the differences between the Chevy Blazer and Trailblazer?

Which is the Bigger SUV?

For drivers that want an SUV with a bigger footprint, which also translates into more interior space, the choice is the Chevy Blazer. The Blazer is 486cm long, 195cm wide, and 170cm high.

But smaller means easier maneuverability on city streets and in tight parking spaces. The Trailblazer comes in at 440cm long, 180cm wide, and 165cm high.

Which One is More Off-Road Capable?

The smaller Trailblazer offers an ACTIV model that lives up to its name. It adds all-wheel drive and an ECOTEC 1.3-litre turbocharged engine to help power the small SUV over rough terrain. It gets help from sport terrain tires, a specially tuned suspension, and a functional front skid plate.

On the other hand, the Blazer is more of an all-around athlete. It does have an "Off-Road" drive mode, which optimizes throttle and chassis control systems for handling rough terrain, but with a 2,041kg max towing capacity, the Blazer is built for more on-road antics.

Which SUV Offers More Cargo Capacity?

The Chevrolet Blazer is the larger of the Blazer-badged models, and this space translates to the inside as well. The Blazer offers 863 litres of cargo capacity behind the second row and 1767 litres when the second row is folded down.

On the flip side, the Trailblazer offers 716 litres of capacity behind the second row and 1,540 litres when the second row is folded down.

Does the Blazer or Trailblazer Have More Power?

Being the bigger SUV, the Chevrolet Blazer offers more power and powertrain options. The standard engine is a 2.5-litre four-cylinder that delivers 193 horsepower. Also available are a 2.0-litre turbo-four that delivers 227 horsepower and a 3.6-litre V6 that delivers 308 horsepower.

The Trailblazer offers two different turbocharged three-cylinder engines. The standard produces 137 horsepower on a 1.2-litre three-cylinder while a 1.3-litre four-cylinder delivers 155 horsepower.

Which is the More Economical SUV?

Thanks to its smaller size, the Chevrolet Trailblazer is the cheaper of the two SUVs, starting at $23,998. It comes in four trim levels: LS, LT ($26,198), ACTIV ($30,798), and RS ($30,798).

The Blazer starts at $43,393 for its base True North model and offers two additional trim levels: RS ($46,998) and Premier ($49,398).

How Many Passengers do the Blazer and Trailblazer Hold?

Both the Trailblazer and the Blazer hold five passengers in their two-row configurations. Neither offer a third row for additional passengers. Because of its slightly larger size, passengers will have more space in the Blazer.

Both the Trailblazer and the Blazer are great models from Chevrolet, but their similar names and styles should not fool drivers into thinking they are alike. They have their own pros and cons that drivers need to consider before making a decision.
